Our History

Follyfoot Farm had its humble beginnings as a small respite farm for horses and other animals in beautiful Metchosin BC. Growing up as a child in Wales, Nicole loved the Follyfoot books by Monica Dickens. The books were about a gruff retired British army colonel who took in old, neglected and unwanted horses. Helped by his niece and a couple of key friends, the colonel's farm, Follyfoot, became a welcome haven of second chances for both horses and people.

Nicole had always told herself “If I was fortunate enough to one day have land that could support horses, I would call it Follyfoot Farm”. Starting with a dilapidated cabin buried amidst blackberries, broom and grass that had been abandoned for ten years, the Metchosin property became a small boarding and riding stable. More importantly, it started a tradition of amazing friendships and memories, a tradition that continues to this day. Sadly, Nicole’s family outgrew the property and made the tough decision to move on. After spending a number of years boarding their horses out in Victoria, in October of 2019, their family bought acreage in the gorgeous Cowichan Valley and now call Duncan home.

Our Facility

Extensive renovations to the property have happened and are continuing to happen. We recently added ReitenRight to our all season sand riding ring. This environmentally friendly footing additive provides fantastic cushioning and energy return. It also increases stability and with its ability to retain moisture it helps reduce dust. We noticed an immediate difference in how our horses moved and felt!!

While we had to sacrifice some of our pasture in order to build the riding ring, we still have two grass areas for the horses to kick up their heels and enjoy the three "F"s so integral to horse welfare....Friends, Freedom and Forage. The tired old barn has undergone some substantial changes including a first coat of fresh paint, five generous sized walkout stalls with sliding doors and half walls so the horses can easily see and mutually groom each other, post and rail paddocks, indoor cross-tie areas, an outside wash rack and a brand new heated tack room with mini fridge, microwave and a sitting/library area with over 90 horse themed books to choose from! Future plans include trail obstacles in the field and Working Equitation obstacles for the ring. Vimy Western Riding Club's ring and site of clinics and shows is just up the road and trails are across the street.

“When I can't ride anymore, I shall keep horses as long as I can hobble along with a bucket and wheelbarrow. When I can't hobble, I shall roll my wheelchair out by the fence of the field where my horses graze, and watch them.”
